HC Deb 04 May 1984 vol 59 c249W
Mr. Hoyle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to the answer of 30 April, Official Report, column 5, when and where Zola Budd's father produced evidence of his British citizenship; and when this evidence was accepted.

Mr. Waddington

On 23 March at Her Majesty's consulate in Johannesburg.

Mr. Hoyle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he was aware, prior to saying that Zola Budd's application for citizenship would be received with sympathy, of the commercial relationship between Miss Budd and the Daily Mail.

Mr. Waddington

We neither sought nor received detailed information on this matter.

Mr. Hoyle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he was aware prior to his decision on Zola Budd's application for citizenship, of the relationship between Miss Budd and the South African Ministry of Education.

Mr. Waddington

My right hon. and learned Friend was aware that Miss Budd was a student at the Orange Free State university, but this information was not relevant to his consideration of her application for citizenship.
