Mr. Ashdown

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry when the first units of BT cellular radio will come into operation.

Mr. Tebbit

It is understood that the BT/Securicor joint venture company, Telecom Securicor Cellular Radio Ltd., which holds a cellular radio system licence, plans to open commercial services in early 1985. Under the terms of its licence the company is required to commence services no later than 31 March 1985.

Mr. Ashdown

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether the hand-on facility on cellular radio will enable the location of each individual mobile subscriber to be identified.
