HC Deb 02 May 1984 vol 59 c152W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is satisfied with the co-operation given by Merseyside county council to Merseyside Development Corporation in promoting the success of the international garden festival in Liverpool.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Merseyside county council has made a number of useful contributions to the success of the international garden festival in co-operation with the Merseyside Development Corporation; and many of the council's projects have in turn received financial support from the Government through the urban programme.

Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is prepared to disregard for penalty purposes the expenditure of the Merseyside county council in aid of the international garden festival in Liverpool.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

I have received representations from Merseyside county council asking me to disregard expenditure in connection with the international garden festival in assessing liability to grant abatement. I shall consider this carefully before implementing grant abatement in the first supplementary report for 1984–85 this summer.
