Mr. Norman Atkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the current hospital admission rate; and what proportion of those so admitted are smokers and suffer from such diseases as cancer of the lung, coronary artery disease and chronic bronchitis or emphysema.

[pursuant to his reply, 22 March 1984, c. 582]: The information is not available centrally in precisely the form requested. In 1981, the latest year for which diagnostic information is available, there were an estimated 4,892,010 discharges and deaths (excluding maternity and psychiatric cases) from NHS hospitals in England and Wales, a rate of 985.6 per 10,000 population. The numbers who suffered from the various conditions listed are given in the table. It is not known how many of these were smokers.
