asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much of the expenditure provision on behalf of the British Council in Class II Vote 4 and Class II Vote 8 in 1983–84 is for the purpose of promoting the English language.

Mr. Whitney

The British Council assesses that about £15 million of the total provision is devoted to promoting the English language.
