asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the estimated number of (a) farmers engaged in dairy farming in Scotland and (b) those employees working in Scotland in the dairy industry, including milk distribution, at the current time.

At the June 1983 agricultural census, the number of holdings in Scotland with five or more dairy cows was 3,347.

The number of employees in Scotland working on dairy farms or engaged in milk processing and manufacture, packaging, distribution and milk board activities is estimated to be 15,200.
