HC Deb 27 March 1984 vol 57 cc137-8W
Mr. Colin Shepherd

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list total self-sufficiency levels in the United Kingdom for indigenous type foods for the years 1972 to 1983, both in total and on a commodity basis.

Mr. MacGregor

The figures for United Kingdom self sufficiency for indigenous food are as follows. It is not possible to derive comparable estimates on a commodity basis but estimates of production as a proportion of total new supplies for most indigenous type foods are published in successive annual review of agriculture White Papers (see Cmnd. 9137).

Year Self sufficiency* per cent
1972 62.8
1973 62.4
1974 58.3
1975 63.8
1976 64.9
1977 62.6
1978 67.9
1979 67.7
1980 73.8
1981 76.0
1982 76.9
