HC Deb 27 March 1984 vol 57 cc141-2W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the electronics industries which have located in Scotland in each of the years 1980 to 1984, the estimated number of jobs provided by each project and the total amount of (a) selected financial assistance and (b) regional development grant in each year.

Mr. Allan Stewart

[pursuant to his reply, 20 March 1984, c. 442]: Comprehensive information on companies locating in Scotland is not available. But figures for new electronics projects in Scotland receiving selective financial assistance are as follows. Details of individual offers of selective financial assistance of £5,000 or more are published in British Business after the first payment has been made to the company.

Year Number of projects Forecast jobs Selective financial assistance offered £ million Regional development grant paid to date £ million
1980 8 1,310 6.9 0.1
1981 7 2,144 7.4 0.7
1982 5 914 4.4 0.5
1983 11 1,381 4.8 2.6

Notes

1. The figures in the table are based on accepted offers of selective financial assistance (SFA). One offer of assistance to a new electronics project has been formally accepted so far in 1984. A further three offers, totalling £6 million, with 1,168 associated jobs, are currently outstanding.

2. The SFA figures are on the basis of the amount offered. The regional development grant (RDG) figures are the amounts paid to date since the projects got under way to the companies concerned for investment at the project location (some payments made in the same period relating to earlier projects at the location may be included). The figures exclude payments of RDG of less than £25,000. In many cases applications for regional development grant have not yet been submitted. In the table the RDG figures are allocated to the year in which the SFA offer was accepted.

3. The information covers all new electronics projects receiving SFA, irrespective of country of ownership of the company involved; however, expansion or modernisation projects are not included.

4. Electronics is here defined as minimum list headings 354 and 363 to 367 inclusive of the 1968 standard industrial classification.
