Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many physically handicapped and disabled people, in what positions, are employed by his Department; and what proportion of the total number of employees this represents.

The Department of Education and Science currently employs 51 staff registered under the Disabled Persons' (Employment) Act 1944— 2.14 per cent. of the Department's manpower as at 1 April 1984. They are employed in the following grades:

Executive Officer 6
Clerical Officer 12
Clerical Assistant 14
Paperkeeping Grades 2
Typing Grades 6
Messengerial Grades 4

The Department also employs other members of staff with disabilities who have not registered as disabled.
