§ Mr. Greenwayasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will estimate, in broad figures, the number and cost of experiments on animals in schools, colleges and other educational institutions; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. BrookeNo information about the number and cost of experiments on animals in educational establishments is collected by the Department. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Home Department's publication "Statistics of experiments on living animals, Great Britain 1982" (Cmnd. 8986), a copy of which is available in the Library, indicates that some 813,600 and 29,500 experiments on living animals took place respectively in universities, including medical schools, and in polytechnics in 1982 under the provisions of the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876. Information about any experiments not subject to the provisions of that Act is not available; nor are details of the cost of this work.
