HC Deb 26 March 1984 vol 57 cc16-9W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many offences were recorded in each of the following categories, in each Metropolitian police district, for the latest year; what were the percentage clear-up rates; and what were the comparable figures for 1979 (a) violence against the person, (b) sexual offences, (c) burglary, (d) robbery, (e) theft and handling stolen goods, (f) fraud and forgery, (g) criminal damage, (h) others and (i) total.

Mr. Hurd

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the information requested for 1983 is as given in the following tables. Corresponding tables for a previous year could be provided only at disproportionate cost; those for 1979 would not be entirely comparable because of changes in the counting rules made in 1980.

Clear-up rates differ markedly according to the type of offence and its circumstances both within offence groups and between offence groups. Variations between districts may reflect variations in the types and circumstances of the offences recorded. The number of offences cleared up and the clear-up rate may also be affected by variations in police recording practices. Offences cleared up in one year may include offences initially recorded in previous years. Clear-up rates may be particularly misleading if they are based on small numbers of recorded offences.
