HC Deb 23 March 1984 vol 56 cc609-10W
Mr. Norman Atkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many firms in the Tottenham area have laid off employees during each of the last four years; how many workers were involved; and what percentage the figures represent of the estimated total employed in the area.

Mr. Alan Clark

Information in the form requested is not available. The available estimates, produced by the Department of Education and Science, relate to the educational and economic activities of 16 and 17-year olds at January each year. Estimates for England and Wales for years up to January 1983 are published in the Department of Education and Science "Digest of Statistics, England 1983 (Tables 13 and 14)" and in an earlier statistical bulletin 2/83 "Education and Economic Activity of Young People aged 16–19 years in England and Wales from 1973–74 to 1981–82". Copies of these publications are available in the Library.

Provisional estimates for Great Britain in January 1984, with equivalent data for 1983, were given by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science in his reply to the question from my hon. Friend the Member for Carshalton and Wallington (Mr. Forman) on 7 March 1984, at column 597.
