HC Deb 22 March 1984 vol 56 cc545-6W
Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he is satisfied with the current level of imports of Vauxhall and Ford cars.

Mr. Butcher

Both companies are aware that I should welcome an increase in the proportion of their United Kingdom car sales which is met from domestic production. Ford and Vauxhall have announced their intention, by the end of 1984, to produce in the United Kingdom around 65 per cent. of their total car sales in the United Kingdom market.

Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what further steps he proposes to take to achieve fair trading conditions in the export and import of motor vehicles to and from Spain.

Mr. Channon

The Government will be pressing for reductions in the highest Spanish duties, including those on cars, in the context of her prospective accession to the Community.
