HC Deb 22 March 1984 vol 56 c545W
Mr. Pike

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what steps he is taking to improve the balance of trade in manufactured goods.

Mr. Channon

The Government's policies are providing the right conditions for the successful operation of United Kingdom industry. Inflation is under control, and manufacturers have become increasingly efficient and competitive in terms of price, quality and delivery. Trade in manufactures should not be looked at in isolation, though. Exports of oil and services make a valuable contribution to the economy, not least in the provision of employment.
