HC Deb 22 March 1984 vol 56 c544W
Mr. Peter Robinson

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what proportion of Government expenditure in Northern Ireland in 1983 was devoted to (a) the National Health Service and (b) education expenditure; and how this compares with 1979.

Mr. Butler

Because of the integrated arrangements for the provision of health and personal social services in Northern Ireland it is not possible to separate expenditure on the National Health Service from that on the rest of the health and personal social services programme. The proportions of total public expenditure in Northern Ireland devoted to the respective programmes in the financial year 1979–80 and 1983–84 were:

1979–80 1983–84
Per cent. Per cent.
Health and Personal Social Services 15.6 16.7
Education and Science, Arts and Libraries 15.9 14.8
