HC Deb 22 March 1984 vol 56 cc542-3W
Mr. Soames

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many separate proposals have been made by the Government to resolve the sovereignty question of the Falkland Islands since 1954.

Mr. Whitney

The proposals made by successive British Governments to resolve the well-known differences between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands since 1965 are documented in the report of a committee of Privy Councillors under the chairmanship of Lord Franks—Cmnd. 8787, January 1983. No similar proposals were made between 1954 and 1965.

Mr. Soames

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the substance of the last proposals made to the Argentine Government to reunite the Falkland Islands with Argentina with a view to resolving the dispute.

Mr. Whitney

The report of a committee of Privy Councillors under the chairmanship of Lord Franks — Cmnd. 8787, January 1983—documents the course of dicsussions with the Argentine Government aimed at resolving the dispute, which continued until Argentina's invasion of the islands in April 1982, and records various ideas put forward in them.
