Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many elderly persons were in residential care in local authority homes in 1983 and in each year from 1979.

The numbers of people aged 65 and over resident in local authority homes provided under part III of the National Assistance Act 1948 in England at 31 March were as follows:
