HC Deb 20 March 1984 vol 56 cc432-3W
Mr. Dover

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why the number of civil servants in the Treasury has increased from 1,052 on 1 January 1979 to 2,377 on 1 January 1984.

Mr. Hayhoe

The increase in the number of civil servants in the Treasury between 1 January 1979 and 1 January 1984 resulted from the transfer of certain functions, and the staff employed on them, from the Civil Service Department to the Treasury on 7 December 1981 by the Transfer of Functions (Minister for the Civil Service and Treasury) Order 1981 (S.I. No. 1670). The figure of 2,377 on 1 January 1984 shows a decrease of 205½ from the figure of 2,582½ on 1 January 1982 following that transfer of functions.
