HC Deb 15 March 1984 vol 56 cc228-9W
Mr. Gregory

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many visas for Russian nationals were issued in 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984 to date; how many of these were eligible to take up employment in the United Kingdom in those years; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waddington

The available information on admission to the United Kingdom of nationals of the USSR, all of whom require visas, is published annually in "Control of Immigration: Statistics, United Kingdom" (table 1(b) of the issues for 1980 (Cmnd. 8199), 1981 (Cmnd. 8533) and 1982 (Cmnd. 8944)). In 1983, the number of nationals of the USSR admitted to the United Kingdom was 7,560, of which 40 were work permit holders.
