HC Deb 15 March 1984 vol 56 c213W
Mr. Williams

asked the Prime Minister if she will list the occasions in the last 20 years on which the Prime Minister has taken a non-Civil Service member of the Prime Minister's family to act as personal assistant on an official foreign visit; what range of duties the acting personal assistant was expected to fulfil; and what security provisions were made to enable the acting personal assistant to deal with commercially confidential or classified material or messages.

The Prime Minister

The visit to India and the middle east was the only occasion on which I took a member of my family as my personal assistant. I cannot answer for previous Administrations. My daughter was not paid from public funds and I paid air fares for her. She helped me with all personal arrangements. She took no part in dealing with official materials of the sort referred to by the right hon. Gentleman.
