HC Deb 15 March 1984 vol 56 cc232-3W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many firms which had received regional financial aid in the county of Merseyside and in each of the districts of Merseyside declared redundancies during each year between 1974 and 1983, inclusive; how much they had received in total; and how much was reclaimed by central Government.

Mr. Trippier

I regret that the information requested is not available and to provide even a partial answer would involve a disproportionate cost.

Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many firms in the county of Merseyside and in each of the districts of Merseyside went into liquidation within each year from 1974 to 1983 inclusive; and how many jobs were lost as a consequence.

Mr. Trippier

I regret that figures of company liquidations are not analysed by area. The number of bankruptices, which relate to all individuals and partnerships, handled by the county courts in Merseyside since 1977 are as follows; earlier figures are not included because of a break in continuity at the end of 1976. No information is available on job losses following liquidations or bankruptcies.

Bankruptcies: cases administered by Courts in Merseyside County
Liverpool Birkenhead Total Merseyside
1977 66 35 101
1978 64 33 97
1979 67 18 85
1980 86 22 108
1981 106 29 135
1982 113 40 153
*1983 150 43 193
* Provisional; will be overstated because the number of consolidations and rescissions to be deducted is not yet known. In 1982 there were 21–18 at Liverpool and three at Birkenhead.
