§ Mr. Ralph Howellasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the estimated expenditure for 1983–84 on housing services to (a) those in public sector housing, (b) those in the private sector and (c) other expenditure on housing which cannot be allocated to one of the above categories, excluding any money paid out under the housing benefit scheme.
§ Sir George YoungDetails of estimated public expenditure on housing in 1983–84 are given in the latest public expenditure White Paper (Cmnd. 9143). It includes £810 million of capital expenditure on home improvement grants to private owners and mortgage lending to private persons. Some £1,360 million will be spent on repairs and improvements to houses in the public sector. The remaining £1,390 million cannot be fully attributed to either sector but the largest part of it will be for expenditure on the provision of new dwellings for renting in the public sector, including housing associations. Total Government subsidies to public sector housing are some £440 million.
