HC Deb 15 March 1984 vol 56 c223W
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what advice was given by the University Grants Committee to Heriot-Watt university about the size of the intake in 1983 into the pharmacy department.

Mr. Brooke

In July 1981 the University Grants Committee proposed a reduction in full-time science students at Heriot-Watt university by 1983–84. The committee recommended a substantial reduction in the number of pharmacy students at the university and said that it wished to discuss with the university the possibility of discontinuing pharmacy entirely.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if, pursuant to the answers of 12 March regarding the pharmacy department of Heriot-Watt university, and in view of the anticipated decision on 22 March by the University Grants Committee on its future, he will ensure that he replies to the hon. Member for Edinburgh, West and publishes his reply in the Official Report by 16 March.
