HC Deb 15 March 1984 vol 56 cc242-3W
Mr. Gareth Wardell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he accepts the recommendations of the Manpower Services Commission study, "Computer Manpower in Scotland", that there should be a small expansion in current training opportunities schemes' training provision in computer programming.

Mr. Allan Stewart

Future training provision in computing in Scotland is being reviewed by the Manpower Services Commission in the light of the White Paper "Training for Jobs" (Cmnd. 9135) of January 1984. Current plans for 1984–85 include provision for 190 places compared with 120 places in each of the past two years.

Mr. Gareth Wardell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he accepts the recommendations of the Manpower Services Commission study, "Computer Manpower in Scotland", that the Manpower Services Commission should consider the possibility of providing financial support for approved short courses in computing.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The Manpower Services Commission in Scotland already supports courses in computing with grants available from non-statutory training organisations and industrial training boards and through the training opportunities scheme. The commission will continue to review the pattern of provision so that MSC courses are tailored to meet industry's requirements, as emphasised in the White Paper "Training for Jobs" (Cmnd. 9135) of January 1984.
