HC Deb 14 March 1984 vol 56 c196W
Sir Hector Monro

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if adequate arrangements were made on 4 March to prevent the extensive delay to traffic by the closure of the M8 in central Glasgow; why no advance warning signs were placed on the A74/M74; why diversions to Glasgow airport via Paisley were not placed on the M74 near junction 5; and why no warnings were broadcast on BBC Scotland at 11 am and midday.

Mr. Younger

Strathclyde regional council is the highway authority for the section of the M8 which runs through Glasgow.

I understand that, on 28 February, the regional council notified the police, BBC, Radio Clyde, motoring organisations and press that the westbound carriageway of the M8 would be closed on Sunday 4 March between junctions 15 and 17. A system of local diversions operated. No request was made to my Department for signposting of alternative routes.
