Mr. Alex Carlile

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many civil servants of the rank of executive officer and above are employed in connection with prisons, and by rank, how many of them have experience of service within prisons at prison officer level or above.

Mr. Hurd

[pursuant to his reply, 8 March 1984, c. 655]: There are 820 civil servants of the rank of executive officer (or the equivalent departmental grades) employed at prison department headquarters and regional offices in connection with penal establishments. Of these 248 have previously served in penal establishments in the grade of prison officer or above.
