HC Deb 13 March 1984 vol 56 cc81-2W
Mr. Bermingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many females are serving a term of imprisonment for non-payment of a fine for (a) the most recent date available and (b) the same date for each of the last five years;

(2) how many females were serving a period of imprisonment for non-payment of a fine imposed under section 1(2) of the Street Offences Act 1959, as amended by section 71 of the Criminal Justice Act 1982 for (a) the most recent date available and (b) the same date for each of the last five years.

Mr. Hurd

[pursuant to his reply, 1 March 1984, c. 285]: Central records, which are approximate, show about 40 females serving a term of imprisonment for nonpayment of a fine on 30 June 1983, one of whom was fined for an offence relating to prostitution. A similar number of females was recorded as serving a term of imprisonment for non-payment of a fine on 30 June 1982, none of whom was fined for an offence relating to prostitution. Further information could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
