asked the Secretary of State for Defence in what circumstances troops may be used in support of the civil power; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Stanley

Responsibility for the maintenance of law and order lies with the police. The civil power may however request the assistance of Her Majesty's Forces when police resources are not considered adequate in the circumstances.
