asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people have been detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act within the county of Merseyside since 1979.

Four hundred and seven persons were detained in the Merseyside police force area under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act 1976 between 1 January 1979 and 31 December 1983. This figure can be brought up-to-date by reference to table 2 of the quarterly statistical bulletin on statistics on the operation of the prevention of terrorism legislation.
