Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if, to safeguard the future of the Scotch whisky industry, he will oppose the European Economic Community draft regulation providing for a minimum alcoholic strength of 40 per cent. volume for whisky.

The Government have already issued for consultation proposals for regulations, which would, if implemented, introduce a minimum strength of 40 per cent. for Scotch whisky in the United Kingdom. The consultantions have now been completed and a decision will be announced shortly.
