Ms. Richardson asked

the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he intends to introduce legislation enabling the Court of Appeal to review the appropriateness of sentences challenged by the prosecution as being too lenient.

My right hon. and learned Friend has it in mind to include provisions empowering the Attorney-General to refer an apparently over-lenient Crown court sentence to the Court of Appeal in the legislation establishing an independent prosecution service which will be introduced in a future session, as soon as parliamentary time can be found.
