HC Deb 02 March 1984 vol 55 cc356-7W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the number of manufacturing jobs in Wales each year since 1970 broken down by industrial groups, the peak employment in each group since 1954, the latest available figure, and the number currently unemployed in each group.

Mr. John Stradling Thomas

Estimates of employees in employment for broad groups of manufacturing industries from 1970 to 1983 for Wales are shown in the table. The industries are analysed according to 1968 standard industrial classification and are for June each year. Consistent estimates of employees in employment are only available from 1965 and the peak year for each of the broad groups since then is shown in the last column of the table.

The industrial analysis of the numbers unemployed was discontinued in May 1982.
