asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will now instruct the Minister for Health to meet the trade union representatives of the Barking hospital strikers following his meeting with their employers.

Mr. Fowler

[pursuant to his reply, 25 June 1984]: No. The Government have no formal or direct relationship with the contractors or with the people with whom they are in dispute. My right hon. and learned Friend has not discussed and will not discuss the merits of the dispute with the employers or with those on strike. He has not had or sought any formal meeting with the employers.
