HC Deb 25 June 1984 vol 62 cc364-5W
Sir David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will publish in the Official Report the amount of cabotage allowed by each of the member states of the European Community to the coastal shipping of other member states for the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. David Mitchell

The United Kingdom does not apply any restrictions on the level of foreign flag involvement in UK coastal shipping. A flag analysis of UK coastal shipping is available only for 1980. This showed that other EC flag vessels carried around 19 per cent. by weight of UK coastal trade.

Corresponding statistical information for the coastal shipping of other member states is not available. However, the requirement that coastal cargoes be carried in national flag vessels is included in the legislation of Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Greece and Italy, although in some cases the requirement is frequently waived.
