Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what were the figures for 1983 and 1984 to the nearest convenient date of the number of persons proceeded against for scheduled offences in Northern Ireland; how many persons pleaded guilty to the principal offence; and how many persons in such contested cases were found not guilty of the principal offence

Mr. Scott

646 persons were proceeded against for scheduled offences in 1983. Of these, 466 pleaded guilty to the principal offence and 61 were found not guilty in contested cases. The comparable figures for 1984 up to 30 April are 160, 142 and 10 respectively.
