asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his latest estimate of total expenditure on the National Health Service in 1984–85; and how this figure compares with six years before.

Planned expenditure on the NHS in England for 1984–85 is just over £13½ billion. This is more than double the amount spent in 1978–79 and represents a substantial real increase in resources.
