HC Deb 12 June 1984 vol 61 c400W
Mr. Best

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the revenue implications and the number of persons who would be affected by restricting mortgage interest relief to the basic rate of tax.

Mr. Moore

The tax yield from restricting mortgage interest relief to the basic rate of tax would be about £160 million in a full year at 1984–85 levels of incomes and mortgage interest. About 600,000 taxpayers would pay increased amounts of tax as a result of the change.
