HC Deb 11 June 1984 vol 61 c362W
Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what percentage of the United Kingdom's electricity was generated by nuclear power in 1983; and what information he has as to the corresponding figures for France and West Germany.

Mr. Giles Shaw

Seventeen per cent. of the electricity produced in the United Kingdom in 1983 (including electricity boards and all industrial producers) was generated by nuclear power. This compares with 17.8 per cent. for West Germany and 48.3 per cent. for France.

30. Mr. Douglas

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement on the proportion of electricity being generated by the various fuels, coal, oil, gas, nuclear and hydro for the latest available date in 1984, with a comparison for 1983.

Mr. Giles Shaw

Based on fuel used, the proportion of electricity produced by the electricity boards in the United Kingdom in the first three months of 1984, the latest date for which figures are published, compared to 1983 were as follows:

Per cent.
1984 1983
Coal 75 76
Oil 8 7
Gas
Nuclear 14 15
Hydro 2 3

Note: The totals do not equal 100 because the figures for the individual fuels have been rounded to the nearest whole per cent.
