HC Deb 06 June 1984 vol 61 c165W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what was the reason for the long delays in the Ml (south side) near Watford Gap around 20.00 hours on Friday 25 May; and why arrangements were not made for an announcement of the hold-up to be given on local and national radio.

Mrs. Chalker

On the Friday evening leading up to the spring bank holiday weekend the combination of high traffic volumes and frequent heavy rain showers at the contraflow system in operation near Watford Gap did regrettably cause delays.

The police and motoring associations arranged urgent publicity. Warnings of possible delays at the site were broadcast over national and some local radio stations in advance of the build-up, and I understand warnings were also given on the evening in question.
