HC Deb 31 July 1984 vol 65 cc181-2W
Mr. McGuire

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what would be the total annual cost of allowing parental contributions to students to be assessed on the real income available after income tax has been deducted.

Mr. Brooke

No information is available on the incomes of parents net of income tax. It is estimated, however, that if the rates and scales of contribution to be introduced in 1984–85 for student awards were applied to parents' income net of income tax, assessed parental contributions would be reduced by around £70 million a year.
