HC Deb 31 July 1984 vol 65 cc140-2W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales, in each month of the last five years, if he will give figures for the number of unemployed school leavers aged 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 years or more, distinguishing where necessary those receiving benefit from those not doing so and stating the precise definition of the term school leaver.

Mr. John Stradling Thomas

The information is not available in the form requested. Information on unemployed students/school leavers, who are defined as young people who have not taken up full-time employment since completing full-time education is collected in only three categories: those under 18 years of age, 18-year-olds and those aged 19 years and over. Since November 1982 the unemployment count relates to benefit claimants, but the figures prior to this date relate to people registered as unemployed. The two are not directly comparable, but an estimated series for the period before November 1982 on a claimant basis has been produced for the under-18 age group. It is not practicable to distinguish either registrants or claimants who for any reason are not receiving benefit. The statistics are as follows:

From November 1982 claimants, prior to November 1982
