§ Mr. Strangasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give an estimate of the hospital costs by the following broad specialty groupings>: (a) acute, (b) maternity, (c) chronic/geriatric, (d) mental illness and (e) mental handicap for the most recent year for which figures are available and the previous nine years.

§ Mr. John MacKayThis information is not at present available in the form requested. The Scottish Home and Health Department's annual publication "Scottish Health Service Costs" has until now recorded—
(a) the total running costs of each hospital. However, many hospitals provide a range of services covering two or more of these broad specialty groupings;(b) the prime costs of individual hospital departments by specialty, but these do not go beyond the gross pay of nurses and junior medical staff;(c) the unallocated costs of service departments.As from the 1983–84 edition, which will be published shortly, "Scottish Health Service Costs" will also show expenditure by broad specialty grouping for each health board.
