asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many working days have been lost in the coal mines in each year since 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Gummer

An estimated 7,853,000 working days have been lost through industrial disputes in coal mining in the first six months of this year. The annual average since 1979 is 272,000. The details are as follows:
