asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what is the total cost of all road works presently in being or planned for the A74;

(2) what is the estimated cost of converting all remaining stretches of the A74 from the border to Glasgow to motorway standards.

The cost of current and planned works is as follows:

In addition, a programme of structural maintenance is being carried out on the A74 for which £6.5 million has been allocated in 1984–85. The cost of constructing a motorway between Millbank and the border is estimated at £150–200 million.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the most recently available figures for the volume of traffic flow on the A74.

The average 24-hour traffic flows recorded by the automatic counters on the A74 at Kirtlebridge, Dumfriesshire, in May and early June of this year were 18,094 and 22,540 respectively.
