HL Deb 30 July 1984 vol 455 c641WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What surveys they have conducted on the reconviction rates of young people sentenced to the "short sharp shock", as compared with those of offenders in similar circumstances who are given other forms of sentence, and whether they intend to seek the views of the Prison Officers' Association before deciding whether to continue with, or extend, the use of this technique.

Lord Elton

Reconviction rates are covered in an evaluation of the experiment with tougher régimes in detention centres which was published on 24th July. At the same time we announced a programme of work to establish a consistent régime for the whole detention centre system. The views of the Prison Officers' Association on the experimental regime have been fully taken into account, and they will be consulted during the work which has now been set in hand.
