HL Deb 25 July 1984 vol 455 cc390-1WA
Lord Mulley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will state their intentions as to traffic management on the M.25 and other highly congested motorways, and if they will confirm that a system will be procured to secure a response by way of indicators of speeds and lane closures in the minimum time to potential accidents and problems.

Lord Lucas of Chilworth

: It is my right honourable friend the Secretary of State for Transport's intention that traffic on the M.25 and other motorways should travel as safely and expeditiously as circumstances permit. In deciding the facilities for the M.25, account has been taken of the characteristics of the road; enhancements to the standard signalling arrangements will be provided: e.g. closer spacing of signals on parts of the road and closed circuit television with traffic flow detection at the protentially more hazardous locations such as the tunnel and airports areas.
