HC Deb 25 July 1984 vol 64 c646W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what was the number of new notifications of drug addiction from the Prison Medical Service in 1983;

(2) what was the throughput of drug dependants through the penal system in 1983;

(3) what is the average daily population of drug dependants, by sex, in the penal system.

Mr. Hurd

Provisional figures show that 473 new narcotic drug addicts notifiable under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 were notified to the Home Office by prison medical officers in 1983. The final figure will be given in "Statistics of the Misuse of Drugs in the United Kingdom, 1983" which is due to be published during August. Prison medical officers also notified 227 narcotic drug addicts who were already known to the Home Office. The other information requested is not available.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is satisfied with the ability of the Prison Medical Service to cater for drug dependants.

Mr. Hurd

Yes.
