HC Deb 23 July 1984 vol 64 cc470-1W
32. Mr. Michael Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many coal miners were made redundant by the National Coal Board between 1964 and 1970, 1970 and 1974, 1974 and 1979, and 1979 and 1984, respectively.

Mr. Peter Walker

I understand from the National Coal Board that the number of redundancies among men on colliery books in these periods were as follows:

Numbers
1964–65 to 1969–70 50,836
1970–71 to 1973–74 23,670
1974–75 to 1978–79 21,663
1979–80 to 1983–84 39,751

33. Mr. Eggar

asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many National Coal Board employees have applied for redundancy since the beginning of the present strike.

Mr. Giles Shaw

I understand from the National Coal Board that, since the beginning of the present partial strike, over 20,000 men have sought information on redundancy terms available under the redundant mineworkers payments scheme.
