asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will list the names of organisations normally invited to submit the names of persons for consideration for appointment to the Meat and Livestock Commission.

The Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Lord Belstead)

Appointments to the Meat and Livestock Commission are made jointly by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Secretaries of State for Scotland and Wales. In respect of seven of the 10 members, nominations are invited as appropriate from those producer or trade organisations which are designated for consultation by the commission; and Ministers have regard to these nominations, along with other relevant considerations, when making appointments. The list of organisations is as follows:

  • Association of British Abattoir Owners.
  • Bacon and Meat Manufacturers's Association.
  • British Independent Grocers' Association.
  • British Retailers' Association.
  • Co-operative Union.
  • Farmers' Union of Wales.
  • Federation of Agricultural Co-operatives (UK) Limited.
  • Federation of Fresh Meat Wholesalers.
  • Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers in Scotland.
  • International Meat Trade Association.
  • Joint Animal By-Products Parliamentary Advisory Committee.
  • Livestock Auctioneers' Market Committee for England and Wales.
  • Livestock Traders' Association of Great Britain.
  • Meat Traders' Council, Smithfield Market Tenants' Association.
  • National Association of Catering Butchers.
  • National Association of Wholesale Meat Salesmen in Scotland.
  • National Cattle Breeders' Association.
  • National Farmers' Union.
  • National Farmers' Union of Scotland.
  • National Federation of Meat Traders.
  • National Pig Breeders' Association.
  • National Sheep Association.
  • Scottish Federation of Meat Traders' Associations.
  • Scottish Grocers' Federation.
