HC Deb 17 July 1984 vol 64 cc94-5W
Mr. Richard Page

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what progress has been made in assigning the additional radio channels which the Government announced on 22 December 1983 were to be made available for land mobile services; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

A total of 24 applications for these channels was received by the closing date, some of which covered proposals for different parts of the country.

A panel was appointed to consider the applications. The members of the panel were:

  • Professor K. W. Cattennole (University of Essex)
  • Professor P. A. Matthews (University of Leeds)
  • Mr. B. W. Pomeroy (Touche Ross & Co.)

My right hon. Friend has accepted all of the recommendations of the panel and more than 20 new mobile radio services are to be authorised. These new assignments will permit the expansion of message handling services and common base stations and the introduction of multi-channel mobile radio systems throughout the country.
